A self-hosted coworker is the same coworker as on Rerun Cloud. The pages of the Documentation tab apply as they are; this page points you to them, and says what depends on your install.
Where those pages say “machine”, read “server”: the one your workspace runs on. Where they mention credit, plans or a trial, that does not apply to your install.

The basics

A coworker sits in a Box on the board. It has a name, a handle other coworkers call it by, a soul (its system prompt), a model and its own memory, skills, files and database. You talk to it in a chat, and it can call the other coworkers of the workspace.

Core concepts

Workspace, Box, coworker, skill, memory, run: every term in one page.

Configure a coworker

Its soul, its model and the tools it may use.

What it knows

Skills

Written procedures it loads only when a task needs them.

Data and files

Its database, the shared one, its folder and the shared folder.
Memory. A coworker writes down what it learns and recalls it later. Correct it once and it stays corrected. Recall matches by meaning when RERUN_EMBED_API_KEY is set, and by keywords otherwise. See Memory. The Brain. The pages about your company that every coworker of the workspace reads: what you sell, to whom, how you work. The Foreman seeds it during onboarding from your answers and your website. Reading the website needs FIRECRAWL_API_KEY. Either way, you can write and edit pages yourself.

What it does on its own

Scheduled tasks and webhooks

A cron and an instruction, or a public URL that starts a run.

Human in the loop

How it asks you a question, an approval or a credential.
Scheduled tasks run on your server, so they only fire while it is up. Webhook URLs point at your NEXT_PUBLIC_APP_URL: a service on the internet can only call them when your app is reachable from the internet. Notifications show in the app. This build sends no email notification.

Its computer

Each coworker has a Chromium browser and a screen of its own, on your server. Open Desktop from the coworker to watch it work, and take over when it needs your hands, for a captcha or a sign-in. The browser opens the screen directly on your server’s address, so the screen needs that address reachable from your browser. See The desktop screen.

Its tools

Apps

Installing apps on a coworker, and where credentials live.

The catalog on your install

What ships with the seed, MCP servers and Composio.

Templates

A template packages a working coworker setup for someone else to install. The template library of Rerun Cloud does not ship with this build, so your install starts with none. See Create a template to package your own.

The API

Every coworker is reachable from Claude Code, Cursor or your own scripts through the Rerun MCP server, at your own address instead of app.rerun.build. See the API.
